It is not possible to drive between the Virginia and Maryland sides while on the island. Be sure to bring a wagon with sand wheels for carrying gear to and from the walk-in sites. Amazing experience camping on the beach at Assateague and waking up to a cool breeze and wildlife. In Virginia, access is via Route 175, two miles east of Chincoteague.
